What causes sports injuries?

An accident such as a fall or a heavy blow, not correctly warming up before exercising, pushing yourself too hard or somebody using incorrect equipment or technique can all result in a sports injury. Muscles, joints, bones and connective tissues made up of tendons and ligaments are all prone to injury. Sports injuries often involve joints such as the knee, elbow, wrist and shoulder. These are particularly at risk due to them being held together by ligaments so that they can bend and twist to allow for flexible movement. A sprain occurs when a band of tissue which supports bones is stretched or torn, for example this could be a twisted ankle if someone has fallen over. A strain happens if a muscle or a tendon is stretched or torn, for example if someone over exerts themselves they might pull a muscle. Bruising happens when the blood vessels beneath the skin burst due to the force of an impact. For example, this could happen if somebody was hit by a cricket ball. Serious injuries can need surgery if bones have been broken and are out of alignment or if ligaments have been torn. Most injuries are treatable using the R.I.C.E. method, which stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. It is important to allow the injury to rest as this allows the body to heal and prevents any further damage to the area.

What is Cold Therapy?

This is a broad term used to describe the use of low temperatures in medical therapy, also known as Cryo therapy. This is most commonly used to treat tissue damage and can be exercised in many ways. It is widely used to relieve muscle pain, swelling, sprains and soft tissue damage. It is becoming increasingly popular, brought in to the limelight by athletes who want to recover from intense exercise quicker, and with less damage to their bodies. Typically used on acute or chronic injuries to promote fluid re-absorption and speed up healing time.

Cold therapy combined with Compression therapy?

Cold therapy combined with compression produces an increase in venous and arterial blood flow which helps injuries to heal faster by increasing the level of oxygenated blood reaching the injury. Compression causes the veins to constrict, and this reduces blood flow so that when the compression is released, a rush of freshly oxygenated blood flows back to the affected area. The use of these dual therapies provides targeted relief to the area of injury and works with the body’s natural recovery process meaning that a person would be less reliant on pain medication in their recovery. Cold therapy works to reduce the swelling and inflammation which occurs with most soft tissue injuries. When an injury occurs, the body’s nerves react by sending pain signals to the brain, to alert it to the damage. Swelling usually forms around the injury to protect it from further harm. Intermittent compression gently pushes excess fluid from the swelling back in to the body to be filtered by the lymphatic system. This reduces inflammation by promoting the reabsorption of fluids, and when the compression releases, a surge of freshly oxygenated blood flows to the injury helping it to heal faster. Cold temperature slows down nerve activity and reduces pain from the damaged tissue or joint. Our Cryo-tec products combine these two therapies to create a powerful dual treatment, targeted to help speed up the bodies natural healing process and get YOU back on the top of your game.
