What is Post Operative care?

Post-operative care is the treatment plan for recovery following a surgical procedure. This is designed to support the patient in leaving hospital as quickly as possible and regaining their independence so they can carry on with everyday life.

Increased Recovery Rate

The more effective Post-Operative treatment can be, the quicker a person can get back on their feet and start using the affected body part again. This will depend on the severity of the surgery which has taken place, the patients medical history and their age, weight, and other health factors. Discharge from hospital usually involves ensuring that you have the suitable facilities and support to manage your recovery. This may consist of physio-therapeutic exercises or a plan to rest as much as possible.

Pain Management

One of the biggest obstacles to managing your recovery at home can be pain management. This is one of the biggest advantages of using cold therapy, as the energy extraction keeps the body part cold and slows down nerve activity, reducing the number of pain signals which are sent to the brain.

What kind of operations might this apply to?

Orthopaedic surgery covers a range of musculoskeletal injuries such as spinal injuries, sports injuries, infections and degenerative diseases. This generally focuses on the correction of bones and muscles or joints where there has been damage which is irreparable by the body’s natural healing process. For example, if a person has Osteoarthritis, the cartilage between a knee joint has almost or entirely eroded away and this will cause a lot of pain potentially meaning that they are unable to use the joint as it may be too painful to bear weight.

Joint Replacement

In this situation it would be necessary to have the joint replaced with an artificial one as cartilage doesn’t have its own blood supply to encompass the damage in order to allow for it to regenerate on its own. A knee replacement surgery takes roughly 2 hours to complete, and usually a person stays in hospital for 3 to 5 days. According to the NHS website, it may take up to three months for pain and swelling to settle down. It can take up to a year for any leg swelling to disappear . This could mean an increased difficulty in daily life, and restrict what a person is able to do as well as impacting their body image and self-confidence.

How can Cold Compression Therapy help?

Recovery from surgery such as joint replacements can be lengthy, and one of the biggest challenges involves keeping the joint still so that it can rest. Our Cryo systems are made for use on all areas of the body and are designed to provide targeted cold therapy with compression.

Different Types of Cuff

There are immersive Cryo and Sureflow cuffs for the foot and ankle, calf, knee, thigh, back / hip / rib, elbow, hand and wrist and shoulder. These are the areas which are most injury prone due to being the areas which operate movement and also the areas which usually take the most impact.

Post Operative Pain

After an operation, it is common to experience discomfort as swelling and inflammation appear around the area of surgery. Cryo therapy temporarily slows down the movement of nerves which send pain signals to the brain, providing pain relief to the targeted area, and meaning that you may need less painkiller medication. Fluid will initially try to build up in the area around the injury to protect the body part from further damage.

Reduce Swelling

Intermittent compression from the cold therapy unit helps to continually reduce swelling by pushing fluid back in to the lymphatic system causing pressure to lower in the affected limb and promoting fluid re-absorption in the body. Cold therapy combined with compression produces an increase in venous and arterial blood flow which helps injuries to heal faster by increasing the level of oxygenated blood reaching the injury. This use of dual therapies provides targeted relief to the area of injury and works with the body’s natural recovery process meaning that a person would be less reliant on pain medication during their recovery.
